Sherrel K. Knighton, Attorney
Sherrel K. Knighton, born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, traveled throughout her childhood as a United States Air Force dependent and lived in the Philippines, California, Texas, Arizona, and Germany. Ms. Knighton graduated Valedictorian from Kaiserslautern American High School in Germany in 1989. She attended The University of Texas at Austin and received her Bachelor of Arts degree with high honors in December 1992. While at The University of Texas at Austin Ms. Knighton became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, the Golden Key National Honor Society, the Alpha Kappa Delta Sociological Honor Society, was a United States Achievement Academy All-American Scholar in 1992, and received a College Scholar Award from The University of Texas in 1991 and 1992. Ms. Knighton received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from The University of Texas School of Law in 1996 and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of Texas in November 1996. She is also admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit – 2001; the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas – 1998; and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas – 2000. Ms. Knighton is a member of the Dallas Bar Association.
Ms. Knighton previously practiced law with the Law Offices of Robert E. Luna, P.C. representing Texas public school districts. There she specialized in all areas of delinquent tax collection, including litigation, foreclosure, post-foreclosure resales, and bankruptcy. From September 2000 until she left the firm in July 2002, she headed-up the bankruptcy department. In August 2002, she joined Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP as a bankruptcy attorney in the Dallas Office. Ms. Knighton became a partner at LGB&S in January 2009.
Ms. Knighton has spoken on ad valorem property tax and consumer bankruptcy issues at the 17th Annual DFW Area Chapter 13 Consumer Bankruptcy Conference in November 2007; at the 24th Annual Advanced Consumer Bankruptcy Conference in September 2008; at the Red River Chapter of the Texas Association of Assessing Officers in September 2008; at the State Bar of Texas Property Tax Committee Meeting and Legal Seminar in April 2010; and at the Northwest Central Chapter and the Collin County Chapter of the Texas Association of Assessing Officers in April 2011.
